A Free Photo is a Lasting Impact
Your photos, your work—freely shared for education, research, and the world to see.
By releasing your photo(s) under a free license, you allow it to be used on Wikipedia and beyond.
Why freely license your photo?
By releasing your work under a free license like CC BY-SA, you allow anyone to use the work for any reason, including commercial.
Exposure
Photos on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Commons are frequently surfaced by Google, making it a defining photo when people search for you.
Control Your Image
A freely licensed photo ensures a high-quality, accurate image of you is available, rather than leaving it to chance with low-quality or undesired alternatives.
Public Good
By freely licensing your photo, you contribute to a global knowledge resource, ensuring journalists, educators, and researchers can use it without barriers.
What does free licensing actually mean?
By releasing your photo under a free license like CC BY-SA, you allow anyone to use it.
Attribution
Any users of your photo must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if any changes were made.
Broad Usage
Anyone can use, modify, and share the image for any purpose, including commerical.
Legal Protections
The license provides a clear legal framework that defines how your work can be used.
What can I release?
You can freely license a photo that you own the copyright to. This means that you either have to have taken the photo yourself, or obtained the copyright (such as through being a work-for-hire, or the photographer otherwise contractually transferring their copyright to you).
If your organization owns the copyright, someone within the organization who has the authority must be the one to release the photo under a free license.
